This is an example of the color variation of the Timber Rattlesnake. Especially back east and through the Appilachian Mtns. the Timber Rattlesnake tends to be either the black phase or the yellow phase. In the Oarks where I live the Timber rattlesnake can be found from the black phase to the yellow phase but most are the gray phase which some would call the Canebrake Rattlesnake. They are all Horridus crotalus but it is amazing how much difference there is in the coloring. I don't know of any other rattlesnake that will vary in coloring as much as the Timber Rattlesnake.
